Is Laser Treatment Effective for Glaucoma?

When people ask if laser treatment is effective for glaucoma, they are often referring to selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). SLT is an in-office laser procedure most commonly used for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It helps the eye’s natural drainage system work better, lowering intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the main controllable risk factor for glaucoma progression.

Is Laser Treatment Effective for Lowering Eye Pressure?

For many patients, yes. SLT is widely used because it can lower IOP and may reduce the need for daily glaucoma drops. Studies comparing SLT with medication as first-line therapy have found SLT to be a safe and effective alternative, with many patients maintaining good pressure control over time.

It’s also important to set realistic expectations. SLT does not “cure” glaucoma, and its pressure-lowering effect can fade. However, a single SLT treatment may last 2 to 3 years, and sometimes longer.

Which Types of Glaucoma Respond Best?

Effectiveness depends heavily on your glaucoma type and how high your pressure is to start.

·       Open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension often respond well to SLT.

·       Narrow angles or angle-closure glaucoma may require a different laser procedure, such as a laser peripheral iridotomy, to improve fluid flow and reduce the risk of sudden pressure spikes.

·       More advanced or complex cases may be treated with other laser approaches, sometimes to reduce fluid production rather than improve drainage.

That is why a comprehensive evaluation matters. The “right” laser depends on what your optic nerve needs and how your eye is structured.

When Laser Can Be a Smart Next Step

Laser glaucoma treatment can be a good option if you are trying to control pressure more consistently or simplify your routine. In our glaucoma care setting, SLT is often considered when:

  • You have early open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and want an option beyond drops
  • You are having side effects, cost concerns, or adherence issues with medications
  • Your eye pressure is not at goal on your current treatment plan
  • You want to reduce your reliance on multiple glaucoma drops over time

What to Expect from the Procedure and Recovery

SLT is typically quick and performed in the office. Numbing drops are used, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. You may have mild irritation or blurry vision for a short time. Your eye pressure will be checked after treatment and monitored over the following weeks to confirm your response and decide whether you still need drops or can reduce them.

Find Out If Laser Treatment Is Right for Your Glaucoma

Laser treatment can be very effective for the right type of glaucoma, especially when the goal is lowering IOP and reducing dependence on medications. The best way to know if it fits your needs is an exam that measures your eye pressure, evaluates your optic nerve, and looks closely at your drainage angle.
